Dear Sir or Madam:

Karol was born with myelomeningocele, which results in flaccid paraparesis, feet deformation, hydrocephalus, neurogenic bladder, constrictor muscle paralysis, impaired vision and hearing. On the day when he was born, he underwent an operation of the myelomeningocele, which led to purulent meningitis and brain anoxia.After a 4-month period of treatment he underwent operation in which a ventriculoperitoneal shunt was implanted.

Karol is now 5 years old and is under constant care of urologist, nephrologists, orthopedist, neurologist, neurosurgeon, audiologist, oculist, physiotherapist, speech therapist and psychologist. There are great chances that he will be able to walk. He has undergone a series of operations on his feet, legs and thighs. At the moment he is learning to walk with crutches. He is assuming erect position. He can get down from his bed, stand up holding the wall bars and keep the balance for a while. He has been able to achieve this because of the possibility to stay at the Central Hospital for Children (Centrum Zdrowia Dziecka) in Warsaw, Clinical Hospital in Lublin, „NEURON” Centre in Małe Gacno, Foundation „Zdążyć z Pomocą”, where he was rehabilitated. Moreover, he has regular exercises at home.

All this is very expensive. We – Karol‘s parents are doing our best to provide the best treatment, physiotherapy, and orthopedic equipment for our son. Unfortunately the cost of one stay at the centre of physiotherapy is more than        1500 EURO, furthermore we regularly travel to distant places in Poland for the check-ups at different specialists’, e.g. Warsaw – 250km, Lublin – 70km.

That is why we ask all People of Good Will, foundations and firms for help in collecting funds for Karol’s treatment and rehabilitation. He is only 5 years old but he is a child of great internal force, his hopefulness and willingness to overcome the limitations and difficulties is something amazing to us and gives us great power and motivation. His every little achievement makes us very happy, optimistic and full of hope that he can do better and live better.

We will be extremely grateful to all of you, for every smallest donation, as it will enable our son to continue his treatment and rehabilitation, and in the future will give him the chance to live independently.
